What: Fairfield existed between the years 1815 and 1975, give or take a calendar month on either end of that. Why: The town was inundated in the early 1970s by a federal reservoir, sending its 100 or so families scurrying for safety as the floodwaters slowly backed up for about 7 years. We almost didn't have time to move our belongings, trees, cemeteries ... whatnot. So don't go scuba-diving for gold lockets. You won't find any.
